Un Cane, la sua Palla e la Fotografia - A Dog, its Ball and Photography

Ieri ho scattato questa foto. Mi piace, così l'ho pubblicata sulla mia pagina Instagram e un amico fotografo, eta.beta70, ha commentato così: "Può la fotografia rappresentare la realtà? O piuttosto altro non è che il punto di vista del fotografo, che nel momento in cui sceglie I'inquadratura piuttosto

che la prospettiva, decide su cosa mettere I'accento, nell'incessante eterna ricerca dell'immortalità... ? ".

Un pensiero interessante A cui ho risposto con quello che penso significhi fotografare. Quando scatto una foto, ho completato un processo iniziato in precedenza. Un processo mentale che si traduce in scelte operative. Ogni foto è il risultato di scelte consapevoli di inquadratura (ciò che scatto e ciò che lascio fuori dalla cornice), l'esposizione, la scelta del soggetto principale, la scelta dei soggetti secondari e la loro disposizione, il bianco e nero o il colore e altro ancora. Ci sono anche scelte nella fase di post produzione. Contrasto, filtro rosso o arancione, possibile ritaglio (ma questo dovrebbe essere evitato), raddrizzamento dell'orizzonte e altro. Queste scelte, tutte queste scelte, obbediscono solo alla logica creativa. A un solo perché. Scatto questa foto per dire qualcosa. Anche le semplici cartoline, le foto ricordo, le foto commerciali e le foto per i passaporti raccontano qualcosa. In mezzo a tutto ciò, al centro di tutto questo c'è la vita che si svolge. A volte devo sperare che gli dei della fotografia, come nel caso di questa foto, facciano stare fermo il cane per il tempo necessario all'uomo che avanza dietro le colonne di sinistra per raggiungere il punto in cui lo voglio, e il vento non faccia sparire le nuvole in alto a destra. Ecco perché, secondo me, per scattare una foto come la vogliamo, dobbiamo conoscere questo processo in modo approfondito. E voler capire il mondo per raccontarlo agli altri.

An interesting thought. To which I replied with what I think is the meaning of photography. When I take a photo, I complete a process that has started earlier. A mental process that translates into operational choices. Any photo is the result of conscious choices of framing (what I shoot and what I leave out of the frame), exposure, choice of the main subject, choice of secondary subjects and their arrangement, black and white or color, and more. There are other choices in the post production phase. Contrast, red or orange filter, possible cropping (but this should be avoided), straightening of the horizon and more. These choices, all these choices, obey to one creative logic only.

Just one. I take this photo to say something. Even simple postcards, souvenir photos, commercial photos and passport photos "mean" something. In the midst of all this, indeed at the center of all this is, there's life that unfolds. Sometimes I have to hope that the gods of photography, as in the case of this photo, let the dog sit still for the time necessary for the man who advances behind the columns on the left to reach the point where I want him, and the wind does not make the clouds at the top right disappear. That's why in my opinion, to take a picture as we want it, we need to know this process in depth. And have the will to understand the world to tell it to the others.

Todo Cambia - Everything Changes

Se ricordo bene, era il 1978. I miei genitori mi regalarono la mia prima reflex elettronica: una Canon AE1 Program. Avevo imparato a sviluppare la pellicola in bianco e nero e a stampare le foto. Avevo fatto due corsi e comprato un libro sulla fotografia. Mi sentivo già fotografo. E i fotografi, quelli veri, per me erano quelli che fotografavano in bianco e nero.

Un giorno un mio amico, che era iscritto al circolo della fotografia (io, al solito anarchico, non mi ero mai iscritto né lo avrei mai fatto in seguito), mi mostrò delle foto a colori di Fred Herzog e Alex Webb. Foto di strada, a COLORI! Magia. Studiai anche, subito, i cromatismi e le geometrie di Franco Fontana. E da quel giorno la mia visione del mondo un poco mutò. Credo ancora oggi che essere aperti alla magia degli altri, ai colori, agli sguardi degli altri, ci migliori, come fotografi e come esseri umani. Todo cambia.

If I remember correctly, it was 1978. My parents bought me my first electronic SLR: a Canon AE1 Program. I had learned to develop black and white film and to print photos. I had taken two courses and bought a book on photography. I already felt like a photographer. And the photographers, the real ones, for me were those who photographed in black and white.

One day a friend of mine, who was enrolled in the local circle of photography (I, an anarchist as usual, had never signed up nor would I have done it later), showed me some color photos of Fred Herzog and Alex Webb. Street photos, in COLOR! Magic. I immediately studied Franco Fontana's colors and geometries. And from that day my vision of the world changed a little. I still believe that being open to the magic of others, to colours, to the eyes of others, improves us, as photographers and as human beings. Everything changes. Todo Cambia.

Il Fotografo e l'Attore - The Photographer and the Actor

L'attore si trucca da solo nel suo camerino, di fronte allo specchio. Lo vedo trasformarsi nel suo personaggio, lasciarsi scivolare nell'altro. È un momento speciale. Non conta più il nome, l'età perde importanza. Si entra in un altro mondo. Fatto di parola, gesti, movimenti che cogliere con una foto non è semplice. È buio. C'è silenzio qui. Poco distante, in fondo al corridoio, la scena arredata e deserta, chiusa da una grande tenda, oltre la quale si sente bisbigliare il pubblico. Anche io faccio una maschera della mia macchina fotografica. Una maschera che mi permette di avvicinarmi al mistero dell'altro più di quanto potrei normalmente fare. Essere fotografo permette di percorrere territori spesso proibiti. Superare porte solitamente chiuse. In questo senso, essere fotografo vuol dire scegliere di sentire chi si fotografa. Non si può cercare di catturare l'altro se non si lascia la nostra maschera e si accetta di lasciarsi andare all'altro. Essere fotografi è un po' essere attori.

The actor is putting on makeup in front of the mirror, in his dressing room. I watch his transformation into his character, while he slips into the Other. It is a special moment. The name no longer matters, age loses importance. You enter another world. Made of speech, gestures, movements that is not easy to capture with a camera. It is dark. There is silence here. Not far away, at the end of the corridor, there's the empty stage, closed by a large curtain, beyond which the audience can be heard whispering. I make a mask of my camera. A mask that allows me to get closer to the mystery of the Other than I could normally do. Being a photographer allows you to travel through often prohibited areas. Go through usually closed doors. In this sense, being a photographer means choosing to feel who you photograph. You cannot try to capture the Other if you don't let go of your mask and agree to let yourself go towards the Other. Being a photographer is a bit like being an actor.

Una Foto che non Piace a Nessuno - A Photo Nobody Likes

Questa foto non è mai piaciuta molto. È stata esposta in varie mostre personali. I visitatori la osservano. Poi vanno oltre. Perplessi. Le 4 copie stampate su carta di qualità museale sono nel mio studio, ancora invendute. Ieri, mentre sistemavo l'archivio dopo il trasloco di qualche giorno fa, ne ho presa una e l'ho esposta sul muro. Perché per gustare veramente una foto bisogna vederla stampata su carta. Respirare l'inchiostro, vedere i toni del bianco e nero, quasi percorrerla con i polpastrelli. La osservavo e ho sentito l'odore delle periferia di Roma, ripercorso le strade del quartiere della Magliana che finiscono nel suburbano. Un intreccio di bellezza, decadenza e contrasti così forte che pare non essere mutato più dal dopoguerra. Forse cercavo delle memorie neorealiste quel mattino. Memorie di Rossellini, Blasetti, Germi, Rosi... Magari Antonioni, forse Pasolini.

Poi è sbucato dal nulla questo cane randagio. Ed è venuto a salutarmi. Che bello quell'attimo spontaneo d'amore e felicità. Come quando sei perso nei pensieri e all'improvviso le nubi si aprono e filtra la luce. Epifania si chiama, in letteratura. Rivelazione. Questo è ciò per cui fotografo, e scrivo. Questo è ciò che vi propongo.

This photo has never been much liked. It has been exhibited in various solo exhibitions. Visitors observe it. Then they go further. Perplexed. The 4 copies printed on museum quality paper lay still unsold in my studio. Yesterday, while I was arranging the archive after the move of a few days ago, I took one of the copies and hung it on the wall. You know, to truly enjoy a photo you have to watch it printed on paper. Breathe the ink, see the black and white tones, almost go through it with your fingertips. I watched it and I felt the smell the suburbs of Rome, retraced the streets of the Magliana district that end up in the suburban area. A mix of beauty, decadence and contrasts so strong that it seems not to have changed since the post-war period. Maybe I was looking for Neorealist memories that morning. Memoirs of Rossellini, Blasetti, Germi, Rosi ... Maybe Antonioni, perhaps Pasolini.

Then this stray dog came out of nowhere. And he came to greet me. How beautiful that spontaneous moment of love and happiness. Like when you are lost in thoughts and suddenly the clouds open and the light filters. Epiphany it is called, in literature. Revelation. This is what I photograph, and write for. This is what I propose to you.
