Ma qualcosa in comune c'è, lo sento, tra queste due realtà.
Fotografo le porte e le mura, i grandi palazzi, le piazze eleganti, le ville d'ombra e le limonaie nascoste nelle campagne assolate. Le opere pazienti dei mastri muratori, degli anonimi ingegneri del medioevo o degli artisti ingegneri dei secoli seguenti. Mi pare in fondo che tutto sia riconducibile allo sforzo dell'uomo di adattarsi e adattare la terra in cui nasce e cresce all'esistere quotidiano. Ogni pietra è un uomo. E sono tutti gli uomini che uniti danno forma alle geometrie che sorreggono le forme dell'abitare e del vivere. Soli non si è edificio. Soli non si è Città. Soli non si esiste.
Ma qual' è la pietra che sostiene il ponte ? - chiede Kublai Kan. - Il ponte non è sostenuto da questa o quella pietra - risponde Marco - ma dalla linea dell' arco che esse formano.
Kublai Kan rimane silenzioso, riflettendo. Poi soggiunge : - Perché mi parli delle pietre ? È solo dell' arco che mi importa.
Marco Polo risponde: - Senza pietre non c' è arco."

I walk through Lucca as I walk through memories. It feels strange to me. Like a sailor far from the sea, I timidly touch with my astonished gaze the Gothic and the Romanesque. I, born on the water, all libeccio wind, silver flakes and brackish smell, here I walk slowly through the alleys of the City of the Fabulous Silk Merchants. Here in Lucca there are one hundred churches, the Santa Croce, Ilaria del Carretto. By the sea, the city behind the mountain is haunted by the echo of the voices that scream on the piers, the storms of wind and water, the communists and priest-eaters, the sea and the memories of a lively city born of a thousand races destroyed by the bombings of the Allies.
But there is something in common, I feel it, between these two realities.
I photograph the doors and the ancient walls, the large buildings, the elegant squares, the shaded villas and the lemon groves hidden in the sunny countryside. The patient work of master masons, anonymous medieval engineers and the artists of the following centuries. It seems to me that everything is due to the man's effort to adapt himself and adapt the land in which he was born and raised to daily existence. Each stone is a man. And it is the union of all men who builds the geometries that support the forms of living and life itself. Alone there is no building. Alone there is no City. Alone there is no life.
"Marco Polo describes a bridge, stone by stone.
“But which is the stone that supports the bridge?” Kublai Khan asks.
“The bridge is not supported by one stone or another,” Marco answers, “but by the line of the arch that they form.”
Kublai Kahn remains silent, reflecting. Then he adds: “Why do you speak to me of the stones? It is only the arch that matters to me.”
Polo answers: “Without stones there is no arch.”
